A LEVEL 20 St Mary’s CTK Content You will find A Level Physics a fascinating course if you are interested in the workings of the universe and the theories that underpin it. A few of the topics covered are particle physics and radiation, which consists of understanding the nature of mass, energy, matter and how it relates to the history and creation of the universe. Mechanics looks at forces and motion, and why objects move. Other year 1 topics are waves, materials, electricity, and circular and oscillating motion. In year 2, gravitational fields look at the motion of orbits such as planets and satellites. Other year 2 topics are thermal physics, electric and magnetic fields, alternating current and transformers, capacitors, and nuclear physics. Practical work underpins all the topics throughout the course. In year 2, you can select your final unit for study from either astrophysics, medical physics, or engineering physics. This choice depends very much on what you have decided to study at university. PHYSICS A LEVEL An A Level in Physics is an engaging yet challenging course that can lead to a wide range of careers, such as engineering, climate science, astronomy, architecture, radiology, computer science, teaching and medicine. Entry Requirements Please see the entry requirements on page 11. You will need either GCSE Physics or GCSE combined Science at Grade 6 or above. Students studying A Level Physics are also required to study A Level Maths. Assessment You will be assessed by a written examination at the end of each year of your course. Your A Level in Politics will open the door to a variety of industries such as politics, journalism, diplomatic service, civil service, and law. POLITICS A LEVEL Content A Level Politics will allow you to hone your analytical and essay-writing skills. The course will comprise a variety of different study methods, including debates and discussions, independent research, and evidence-based questions and essays. In order to get the most out of government and politics, you will need to have an interest in politics, enjoy debates, and consider other people’s viewpoints before coming to a reasoned conclusion. Also you will experience the engagement of people with politics, learning how the political institutions of the UK work. You will also explore the foundational concepts behind political actions and examine the various political ideas that have surfaced over the past century. Studying politics in the UK opens diverse career paths such as government, diplomacy, journalism, and policy analysis, with many graduates working in the civil service shaping national policies.
