A sixth form centre for excellence 19 MATHEMATICS A LEVEL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL EXTENDED CERTIFICATE (Equivalent to 1 A Level) An A Level in Maths can be the starting point to a variety of careers and Higher Education courses – from engineering to accounting. As a highly regarded subject it opens doors to career paths including accountancy, economics, teaching, engineering, medicine, mathematics and computing. CONTENT Mathematics is both a stimulating and challenging subject, which is very highly regarded at advanced level. Both employers and universities will take a keen interest in you if you have successfully completed A Level Mathematics. Topics you will study include indices, surds, polynomials, coordinate geometry, differentiation, integration, trigonometry, sequences, logarithms, first order differential equations, vectors and numerical methods. In mechanics, you will also study forces, equilibrium, kinematics, Newton’s laws of motion and momentum, whilst in statistics you will study the representation of data, probability, discrete random variables, continuous random variables, hypothesis testing and correlation and regression. To succeed on this course, you must have a strong enthusiasm for problem solving. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In addition to the general entry requirements for CTK St Mary’s on page 10, you will also need GCSE Mathematics at grade 6. You will also be required to show an appropriate knowledge of algebra before being enrolled onto the course. ASSESSMENT You will be assessed by exams at the end of each year of study. This is an excellent course to study alongside an A Level, if you are considering a degree or career in information systems, computer animation, website design or database administration. Information Technology is a good pathway to combine with business information systems and project management. CONTENT This qualification is equivalent to one A Level and should be taken alongside other A Level subjects. The course will help you to select and use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to carry out investigations. You will learn how to capture and handle data, solve problems, make decisions and present information. In addition to this, you will become aware of the impact of ICT on the way people live and work, plan and manage projects and work effectively, independently and with others. Topics you will study include creating systems to manage information, using social media to manage information, information technology systems and website development.
