A LEVEL 18 St Mary’s CTK MEDIA A LEVEL An A Level in media can be the starting point to a variety of careers - from journalism to film. As a highly regarded subject, it opens doors to a range of career paths, including journalism, photography, marketing and advertising, computer gaming, or presenting. Content Media is a modern, exciting, and innovative course that addresses social issues. Your A Level course will combine your theoretical knowledge with your practical skills. Also, you will be encouraged to challenge and explore the ways in which media texts have been produced, circulated, consumed, and interpreted. In addition to this, you will be required to conduct independent research to solidify your learning. There are three components to your Media A Level; component one is media products, industries, and audiences - during which you will learn to analyse media language and representation in relation to advertising, marketing, music videos, and newspapers. You will investigate and develop an understanding of media industries and audiences, and how they relate symbiotically. Entry Requirements Please see the entry requirements on page 11. Assessment You will be assessed through to written exams, each worth 35% of your final qualification. The remaining 30% is assessed through the production of practical coursework. Content Your course will help you expand your knowledge of culture and develop your linguistic skills. You will focus on a range of historical and contemporary topics which will further develop your understanding of France/Spain and Francophone and Spanish-speaking countries. You will also study French or Spanish literature and film, which will encourage you to keep up to date with current affairs. During the course you will have the opportunity to travel to France or Spain, to improve your linguistic skills and knowledge of the culture depending on your chosen language. MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (MFL) A LEVEL An A Level in a modern foreign language would be beneficial to a great majority of courses at university and would be particularly helpful if you choose to spend a year abroad. Modern languages can lead to a variety of exciting careers such as translating, interpreting, finance, law, sales and marketing, engineering, tourism, leisure, public sector, United Nations and European Union, media, teaching (primary and secondary), and linguistics. Additionally, the knowledge of a foreign language can allow you to pursue any career at an international level. Assessment You will be assessed on your listening, reading, writing, speaking and grammar manipulation through translation. Entry Requirements Please see the entry requirements on page 11, you will also need GCSE French or Spanish at a grade 9-6.
